August 13 Keynote Speaker
James Ford, a ninth grade World History teacher at Garinger High School in Charlotte, was selected 2014 Burroughs Welcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year in March. Ford was often told by elders while growing up, “if you find what you love to do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Figuring out a career path was a complicated process. His personal journey was a bit unorthodox, but in the end, he realized that it was his passion that ultimately led him to his purpose – education. Ford’s professional life began as a truancy intervention specialist and a director of a teen center for youth at risk of dropping out of school. As North Carolina Teacher of the Year, Ford spends the school year traveling the state as an ambassador for more than 95,000 teachers in the state.
